WHAT WE DO!

Dunedin Community Law Centre is one of 27 Law Centres around New Zealand. We offer free legal advice and information, representation and education to the people of Otago.

We can help with
Traffic, Employment, Tenancy, Police, Consumer / Debt, Criminal, ACC, Neighbours, Government Departments, Family matters.

What we cant help with
Wills, Trusts and Estates, (other than general information), buying and selling property, business and commercial matters.
Matters that come to the Law Centre remain within the Law Centre. We are governed by the same principles of confidentiality that occur in a solicitor – client relationship.

Representation
We may be able to represent you in the criminal Court if you cannot afford a lawyer and have been declined legal aid. We can negotiate with other agencies on behalf of those who lack the resources to do it themselves, and cannot afford to employ a lawyer.

Education
We give education talks on legal issues to Training Opportunity Groups, community groups, and schools, on Employment, Police Powers, Tenancy, and Consumer, Wills, Human Rights / Privacy. We can formulate a talk and topic to suit the needs of your individual group.

Information / Advice / Assistance
We can give information and advice on a wide number of legal issues. We assess the options available to resolve the issue, and advise on what courses of action you may need to take to resolve it. We can then refer you to a number of lawyers who work in the area – eg family, conveyancing.
We can help you write letters to either begin the resolution process, or clarify issues and concerns. We can draft the letters for you. We can write on your behalf.
